NIICHIMMASH IS 60 YEARS OLD
In late 1942 the Research and Design Institute of Chemical
Engineering (NIICHIMMASH) was established in Sverdlovsk.
In September 1943 the Institute was moved to Moscow.
Nikolai Antonovich Dollezhal, a prominent scientist and a specialist, was
appointed director of the Institute.
The Institute was staffed with highly skilled and qualified specialists in chemical engineering, compressor building, refrigerating engineering. Main areas of activity
were defined and organizational issues were resolved. It all made possible to initiate
development of new equipment and reduce time from research to full-scale production.
In order to build prototypes Armatura works was turned over to
NIICHIMMASH since 1948 the experimental works of chemical engineering.
In a short period of time NIICHIMMASH was capable to start revamping
equipment of chemical and oil processing enterprises and advancing chemical
engineering as a whole throughout Russia.
Before 1946 NIICHIMMASH set up its subsidiaries in Sverdlovsk, Kharkov,
Leningrad and Irkutsk and later in Penza, Severo-Donetsk, Dzerzhinsk and
Novosibirsk.
The activities of NIICHIMMASH covered all types of chemical equipment
including filters, centrifuges, heat-and-mass transfer equipment, dryers, compressors,
rubber and polymer processing equipment, etc.
NIICHIMMASH also contributed to the efforts aimed at developing unique
types of equipment for nuclear and other sectors of industry and enhancing the
country's defence potential.
Much attention was paid to the progression of chemical engineering,
specialization, standardization of machinery and equipment and its parts to cut down equipment range and manufacture different types of equipment made from unified
parts.
NIICHIMMASH became the All-Union research and design institute of
chemical engineering and the leading institute and the powerful research center of
chemical engineering staffed with highly skilled and qualified specialists, well-equipped laboratories and design offices.
The Institute's initiative was to undertake complex development of major
process equipment. NIICHIMMASH placed itself at the head of this activity to design equipment for large-tonnage production of fertilizers, ammonia, phosphoric and
sulphuric acid, dye-stuff, plant protective means, etc.
For a sixty-year period the Institute has made significant achievements in the
advancement of chemical, petrochemical, oil-gas processing, microbiological, wood-
pulp and payer, food and other sectors of industry as well as environmental control.
First nuclear reactors for the world's first nuclear power plant, unique
equipment for production of technical-grade and spectrally pure helium, ethylene, used nuclear fuel regeneration, polymer oriented thermoresistant and shrinkageless films, sea water desalination, the world's first regenerative life support systems for manned space stations, etc. have been developed and commissioned.
Many developments have received high ratings at international exhibitions in
Moscow, london, Paris, New York, Brussels, Leipzig, etc. and patents taken in the
U.S.A., England, France, Japan, Belgium, Italy and other countries.
Based on the Institute's developments equipment for tens of production lines for ammonia, nitrophoska, nitroammophoska, ammophoska, extracted and thermal
phosphoric acid, potassium chloride, etc. has been designed and manufactured.
As a result, a powerful potential for production of fertilizers has been created in our country.
Novel and unique designs have received over 1500 invention certificates and 110 patents.
The Institute has conducted research into new corrosion-resistant steels, alloys
and bi-metals including titanium, Hastelloy, low-carbon, low-alloy, high-tensile grades. Practically all steels and alloys employed in chemical machine-building have been
recommended by the Institute based on its studies.
NIICHIMMASH along with other institutes specialized in state and sector
standardization has developed the most effective techniques for strength analysis and
set general technical requirements for manufacturing welded vessels and conducting
non-destructive testing.
In 1992-1993 due to reorganization of state-owned enterprises they became
privatized and transformed into joint stock companies. In October 1993
NIICHIMMAH was also turned into a joint stock company with 38% stake in Federal ownship.
Nowadays NIICHIMMASH is prepared to offer services related to &e
development of highly efficient, competitive equipment. Its profit is mostly generated
by receiving orders for regenerative life support systems and in-field diagnostics of
various types of equipment for chemical, petrochemical and wood-pulp and paper
industries as well as equipment in demand for environmental control.
