Development and updating of standards and norms for non-destructive testing (NDT) , new techniques and procedures (RD , OST , GOST and other engineering documentation for mechanized and manual ultrasonic inspection of the weld joints and thickness gaging , magnetic particle , dyc penetrant, X-ray and visual inspection.

Compliance of standards and norms with international codes (ISO/TK 135 and EN 473).

Updating of existing inspection methods and techniques.

Development of new instruments and equipment for NDT and metal structure analysis.

Qualification and certification of NDT personnel and laboratories.

Carrying out non-destructive testing and examination of industrial safety of hazardous facilities.

Research & engineering services

Development of NDT original procedures for various products and materials and their approval by Russia’s Gosgortechnadzor authorities.

Qualification and certification of flaw detector operators (I ,II and III levels for UT , MP , X-ray, DP , VI) and NDT laboratories.

Carrying out diagnostics and examination of industrial safety of facilities under jurisdiction of Russia’s Gosgortechnadzor.

For the first time ultrasonic inspection of weld seams has been carried out (by N. V. Khimchenko) using an angle-beam search unit.

Inspection procedures for the large-section weld seams , high-alloy and two-layer steels , ultrasonic inspection of butt-welded polythylene pipe joints , metal and alloy structure and phase analysis have been developed.

Achievements

A complex in-field non-destructive testing of petrochemical equipment throughout of diagnostics has been developed and is currently used in industry. Mechanized and automated plants for ultrasonic inspection of weld joints in petrochemical equipment have been developed and introduced at chemical and oil machine building enterprises. A number of instruments for metal structure analysis (alpha phase-meter , FA-1 , FA-1M , ferrite meters) have been developed.

The certification centre for qualifying flaw detector operators and NDT laboratories has been set up as an integral part of the department.

280 papers have been published , 42 authors' certificates , eight patents have been received and a monograph has been published.

The handbook “Non-destructive testing. Russia 1900-2000” (Moscow. “Mashinostroenie” 2001) describes the achievements of the Central laboratory in more detail.
